The aims of
research were to know the students’ ability in mastering simple present tense in
Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri I Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat, to know the
difficulties that faced by students’ in learning simple present tense in
Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri I Gunung
Tuleh Pasaman Barat, to know the efforts done by English teacher to
overcome the students’ difficulties in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri I Gunung
Tuleh Pasaman Barat.
This research
was done in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri I Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat. The
sources of data were the second year students, the English teacher and Head Master
of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri I Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat. The kind of this
research is qualitative research by using descriptive method. The instruments
of collecting data were observation, interview and test.
After the
research was done it can be known that the students’ mastery of simple present tense in Madrasah Tsanawiyah
Negeri I Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat can be categorized into enough category. The students’ difficulties
in learning simple present tense were the students’ lack of the knowledge to
determine the subject, the students had poor vocabularies, students got
difficulties to determine the verb that used addition “s” and “es”, and
students felt difficulties to determine verb of negative and interrogative
sentences. The efforts done by English teacher to overcome the students’
difficulties were the English teacher often repeat the lesson especially in
determining the subject and the addition of “s/es” of the verbs, the English used demonstration method, the
English teacher asked the students to know 10 vocabularies by heart and the
translation every meeting, the English teacher asked the students to pay
attention about the ending letter of the verb while the teacher gave the
explanation and the English teacher always give motivation to the students.
